Earth from Space

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) view and analyze data from a geographic perspective. GIS can be used to work with geographic information as a database, a map or a model.

GIS is a term applied to a powerful technology that revolves around sets of data with a feature they have in common - geography. GIS is also a joining of different sciences: computer science, mathematics, cartography, graphic arts and database management. GIS combines layers of information about a place to give you a better understanding of that place. The  layers of information you merge depends on your purpose: finding the best location for a new store, analyzing environmental damage, viewing crime patterns, and so on.

The Harris County Information Technology Centers GIS program consists of several diverse teams; departmental teams support local needs, while enterprise teams support overall county GIS needs.
